Ordered to be built by Professor Doctor Bissaya Barreto (the prestigious surgeon, doctor, professor, politician, businessman and philanthropist born in Castanheira de Pera), this space was designed by the architect Alfredo Duarte Leal Machado in 1939 and is one of the examples of the 26 “Casas da Criança” (Children's House) which were raised in the Centro Region, under the motto “Façamos felizes as crianças da nossa terra” (Let us make the children of our land happy). Its surrounding garden was once considered one of the most beautiful in Portugal.
